Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has announced her intention to run for the presidency in 2024, making her the first major Republican contender to challenge Donald Trump for the GOP nomination.

In a video statement, Haley expressed the need for a “new generation of leadership to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border and strengthen our country, our pride and our purpose."

Her official campaign launch is expected to take place in Charleston, South Carolina.

Haley’s announcement comes after several months of speculation about her potential candidacy, with many expecting her to challenge Trump.

Despite serving as a member of the Trump administration, Haley distanced herself from the former president after the Capitol insurrection in January 2021, and her recent remarks indicate her willingness to offer a more moderate vision for the party's future.

The former South Carolina governor is a well-known figure in the Republican Party, with a reputation as a shrewd politician and potential future leader of the party.

In 2016, she criticized Trump’s candidacy, but later supported him during his presidency. She has also been a strong advocate for Israel and a vocal critic of Russia, Iran and China during her tenure at the United Nations.

Haley’s announcement has the potential to shift the Republican landscape as the party continues to struggle with internal divisions following Trump’s tumultuous tenure in the White House.

Her candidacy also puts her in direct competition with other Republican contenders, including former Vice President Mike Pence, who is reportedly considering his own presidential bid in 2024.
