About Magar Dress
The Magar, a warrior tribe of the central Himalayas, is known for their bravery and strength. They have a unique dress code that sets them apart from other ethnic groups in the hill. The men wear a coat called ‘chhatra’ in red or blue with white stripes and another shorter jacket called ‘kozhi’. The women wear a long loose gown called ‘kirt’ with striped sleeves and collar in red or blue on top, along with a shorter blouse called ‘koja’. The Magars also have their own style of dressing as well as hair-tying for men and women to suit their needs during festivals and special occasions. Let’s take a look at what these fascinating people wear!
Chhatra – This is the traditional coat of the Magar men. It is worn with a Koza and is red or blue in color with white stripes. This garment is draped around the shoulders and is open on the front. It has a high collar, sleeves that reach up to the elbows and a belt to keep it tied around the waist.
Barkhu – This is a shorter version of the Chhatra and is tied around the waist with a belt. It has a scarf tied around the neck that is tied in a knot at the back. The sleeves are tied above the elbow and are folded back to the forearm.
Kozhi – This is a short sleeved garment tied around the waist and worn on top of the Chhatra. It is worn only by the Magar men and is made of white cloth with black or red strips.
Women's Dress
Kirt – This is a long loose gown worn by the Magar women and is made of white or red coloured cloth with borders at the end of the garment. It has a long open slit on the side.
Koja – This is a shorter version of the Kirt and is tied at the waist with a belt. It is made of white or red coloured cloth with borders at the end of the garment. It has a long open slit on the side.
